Towering over the old town from its rocky perch, the Castle of Pope Luna is the unmistakable symbol of Peñíscola. Built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century, it later became the residence of Pope Benedict XIII (Pedro de Luna) during the Great Western Schism in the early 15th century.
Now a listed historical monument, the castle hosts exhibitions and cultural events throughout the year, including the famous classical theatre festival in summer. The panoramic views from its ramparts over the Mediterranean are simply spectacular.
Peñíscola's main beach stretches over 4 kilometers of fine golden sand with crystal-clear waters. Blue Flag certified, it offers all amenities: showers, restaurants, water sports and children's play areas.
More intimate and sheltered, the south beach is nestled at the foot of the old town and castle. Its calm, shallow waters make it ideal for families. The picturesque setting with the castle as a backdrop is truly unique.
Peñíscola's casco antiguo is a labyrinth of cobbled lanes, stairways and whitewashed houses with blue shutters climbing up to the castle. You'll find craft shops, fresh fish restaurants and tapas bars with sea views. Getting lost in its streets is a true pleasure, with every corner offering a different view of the Mediterranean.
Peñíscola is a paradise for Mediterranean food lovers. Local specialities showcase the bounty of the sea: arroz a banda (rice in fish broth), suquet de peix (fish stew), grilled langoustines and fideuà. The restaurants along the harbour and in the old town serve authentic cuisine at very reasonable prices.
With over 300 days of sunshine per year and an average annual temperature of 18°C, Peñíscola enjoys one of the best climates in Europe. Winters are mild (10-15°C) and summers are warm without being stifling thanks to the sea breeze. The swimming season runs from April to October.
